- Introducing FileStor
-
- FileStor offers reliable solutions to today's most pressing data
- storage problems. FileStor provides a proven strategy for backing
- up and restoring your valuable data, and an easily accessible set of
- tools to effect that strategy.
-
-
- ___________________
- Installing FileStor
-
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
- The following is needed to run FileStor:
-
- - A 386 or 486 PC System
- - At least 4 MB of total memory
- - DOS 4.01 or greater
- - Windows 3.1/3.11 running in 386 Enhanced Mode; Win95 compatibility
- - A SCSI tape drive and a ASPI-Compliant SCSI host adapter
-
-
- STARTUP FILE REQUIRED
-
- FileStor needs your system to find the following file at startup:
-
- FSPLMSG.SYS
-
- By default, this file is installed to the root directory of the disk
- from which your system is booted, and CONFIG.SYS is modified to find
- this file there. If you prefer to move this file to another directory,
- make sure you update CONFIG.SYS accordingly.
- INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
-
- FileStor is available from the BBS. You'll need to download
- the following files:
-
- FS25101.ZIP
- FS25102.ZIP
-
- DECOMPRESSING YOUR FILES
-
- Use PKUNZIP to decompress the FileStor product files
- either onto floppy diskettes or into a directory on your
- hard drive or server. These files are automatically copied
- into the appropriate directory structure when you unzip them.
-
- Before you install, you'll want to verify that the files you
- downloaded are exactly the same as when we posted them online.
- We recommend you perform this task for maximum anti-virus
- protection. Read the following paragraphs to learn how to
- validate your files.
-
-
- VALIDATING YOUR FILES
-
- Included in the files you downloaded is the Validate program
- (version 2.0.1). Validate is a file-authentication program that
- you can use to check program files for signs of tampering.
- Validate uses two methods of generating Cyclic Redundancy Checks
- (CRC's), and then displays the information so you can compare
- these statistics against the "known value" for the program files.
- The dual CRC checking provides a high degree of security.
- The known value you use for validation is usually provided by the
- author of the program, or you may receive it from a trusted
- information database. You can find the statistics for
- FileStor in the file PACKING.LST.
-
- To confirm that a program file has not been tampered with, run the
- Validate program and then record the validation data produced.
- Compare this data against the file statistics the program author has
- specified. If the information matches, most likely the program
- has not been modified since McAfee put the files online.
-
- To run VALIDATE, enter the following command:
-
- VALIDATE <path spec>
-
- where <pathspec> is the name of a directory and file. (The
- wildcard characters, "*" and "?", can be used when specifying
- <pathspec>.)
-
- The VALIDATE program displays the following information:
-
- <name of directory>
- name of file (starting at row 1)
- extension of file (starting at row 10)
- size of file (starting at row 15)
- date of file (starting at row 25)
- time of file (starting at row 35)
- check method 1 (starting at row 44)
- check method 2 (starting at row 51)
- SAMPLE TXT 12345678 01-01-80 12:01a 1A2B 3C4D
- <number> file(s) have been validated.
-
-
- INSTALLATION TROUBLESHOOTING
-
- The following suggestions may help you if you experience problems
- while installing FileStor:
-
- - If you are using a temporary swap file in Windows and you are
- experiencing problems with installation (failures creating
- librarian files or out of disk space errors), make sure you
- have sufficient disk space for the installation operation.
- Install uses some temporary files during installation. If
- Windows needs to allocate more disk space to the temporary
- swap file while install is active, and you already have limited
- disk space, you may not be able to install FileStor.
-
- - If your workstation does not have a hard drive and you are booting
- from a floppy drive, you must have a second floppy drive in order
- to install FileStor.

- General Program Notes
-
-
- USING TAPE EXPRESS
-
- Tape Express is a part of FileStor that allows you to back up your
- data quickly and easily from within Windows File Manager. To use Tape
- Express, activate it from FileStor's Setup Menu. With Tape Express
- activated, whenever you run File Manager the Tape Express icon
- is displayed, and the PSM (Personal Storage Management) Menu is
- added to File Manager's menu bar.
-
- Before backing up files, you can change Tape Express backup options
- by selecting PSM/Options or by double-clicking the Tape Express icon
- to display the Options dialog.
-
- You can back up files using either the mouse or menu options.
- To back up files using the mouse, select the desired files and
- directories and drag them onto the Tape Express icon. The selected
- files are then backed up to tape.
-
- To backup files using the PSM Menu, select either of the following
- menu options:
-
- - Complete backup of drive, which allows you to back up all files
- on a volume
- - Modified files backup of drive, which allows you to back up only
- files on a volume that have changed
-
-
- NAMING BACKUP JOBS
-
- The following words are reserved for FileStor use and should not be
- used to name backup jobs or media groups:
-
- RESCUE
- NEW
-
-
- MULTI-DRIVE SYSTEMS
-
- For Multi-Drive systems, the lowest SCSI ID drive is selected for
- Import or Identify operations.
-
- Individual drive selection is not supported in this release. Tape
- spanning operations between drives is supported, however.
-
-
- USING RAM DRIVES
-
- FileStor does not support operations against RAM drives, and does not
- normally display them in the File System window. However, some
- third-party RAM drives appear as standard disks in the File System
- window. If you select a RAM drive in the File System window, you
- are prompted to supply a unique name for the drive. When you
- power-down your system, this name is lost, and you will be prompted
- for the name again if you select the RAM DRIVE drive.
-
-
- TAGGING FILES
-
- When you backup and restore files, you can choose to backup or restore
- an entire volume or only specific directories and files. You tell
- FileStor which files you want to backup or restore by "tagging" them.
- When a file is tagged, a red check mark is placed next to it. A
- hollow check mark next to a directory indicates that the directory
- contains tagged files.
-
- If no files are tagged in the File System, all files on the selected
- drive are backed up or restored.
-
- Refer to the FileStor Help file for instructions on tagging files.
-
-
- USING THE RESCUE DISK
-
- Normally, you can restore files by accessing FileStor from Windows.
- However, if you cannot access Windows or FileStor due to a problem
- with your system, you can restore files using the Rescue Disk. The
- Rescue disk contains a subset of the FileStor software and basic
- information necessary to restore your last complete and differential
- backups on protected drives. You can restore any "protected" drive
- using the Rescue disk.
-
- To use the Rescue Disk, insert your Rescue disk and type A: (or B:).
- Then type RESCUE and follow the prompts. You will be able to recover
- your Windows or FileStor drive without having to reinstall either one.
- Refer to "Windows 95 Notes" later in this file for more information
- about using Rescue with Windows 95.
-
-
- ________________________________
- Enhancing FileStor's Performance
-
-
- IMPROVING OVERALL PERFORMANCE
-
- You can enhance FileStor's overall performance speed by installing disk
- caching. We recommend setting the SMARTDrive option supplied with
- Windows 3.1 to a minimum of 1 MByte. Refer to your Windows documentation
- for instructions.
-
-
- IMPROVING SEARCH PERFORMANCE
-
- When searching for files in the Librarian, you can increase the search
- speed by including path names in the search criteria. For example,
- if you enter the following search criteria:
-
- *.EXE
-
- FileStor searches all directories on the selected volume, starting from the
- root directory. However, if you enter the following search criteria:
-
- C:\WINDOWS\*.EXE
-
- FileStor searches only the WINDOWS directory, and the speed of the search
- is greatly improved.
-
